Violet Virginia Montgomery, 90, died October 27, 2021, at Sanford Hospital due to complications from surgery. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 2 at the Bismarck Funeral Home. There will be a visitation Monday, November 1 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bismarck Funeral Home.

Violet was born October 27, 1931, in McClusky, ND to Ernest and Elizabeth (Ockert) Baron. She married Albert Walter in December 1950 and farmed in Turtle Lake, ND. In 1952, they had their daughter Betty. They moved to Bismarck in 1954, where they had their daughter Linda in 1955.

Vi cooked and did janitorial work for the Bismarck Public Schools. She was instrumental in delivering meals to the different schools that didn’t have kitchens. She was very active in the Eagles and the Moose Club Ladies Auxiliary.

Vi moved to Fairbanks, AK in 1973 and married Hollis Montgomery. In Alaska, she worked numerous jobs. She sewed men’s suits (and other seamstress projects), cleaned homes (where she was blessed with great friends), and worked for a caterer.  When she wasn’t working, she knew how to enjoy life. She enjoyed bowling, playing darts, and billiards. In her 70s, she started golfing and went to Arizona to attend John Jacobs Golf School.

In 1999, she moved back to Bismarck with her special kids Princess and Spunky. She enjoyed being back in Bismarck so she could spend time with family, grandkids, and great grandkids. She cooked at Martin Luther School and Lady J’s Catering. She continued golfing and learned to play BUNCO with her special Bison football buddy Alvira. She also enjoyed her time with her special friend Donald Price and other wonderful friends from the Elks. She was an avid sports fan, including football (Chicago Bears), basketball, golf, and baseball. She surprised her Elks friends with how much she knew about sports teams and players.

She is survived by her daughters, Betty Hansen and Linda Schuette (Bismarck), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her sister Gladys Willits (Iowa), and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Hollis Montgomery, sons-in-law Perry Hansen and Don Schuette, grandson Justin Schuette, step-grandchild Julie Hansen-Rhode, and brothers and sisters.

Oh my Betty and Linda I was so sorry to read about the passing of your 💓 Mom. There was such a special lady and always treated me like one of her daughters. She always had a smile & hug for me when ever I would see her. She will truly be missed. May she now Rest In Peace Vi. Love to you and Linda.

So sorry to hear about Vi always smiling. One of the happiest people I’ve met. It was an honor to have had the opportunity to spend time with her. She will be missed by many people in the area. Take care.

We are so sorry for your loss Betty and Linda. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your families. Vi was such a card. We met her at the Dakota Wizards games and would go to the Elk’s for an after game drink. She had a quick smile and pretty blue eyes. She liked to golf with me and give me pointers. She will be missed.

Betty & Linda,
