Katherine Martian passed away April 1, 2021 at age 93 at her home in Bismarck, ND.

Katherine (Johnson) Martian was born June 9, 1927 on the family farm near Esmond, ND, first of seven siblings, the daughter of Carl and Bertie (Priest) Johnson. She attended Isabel Township school graduating from high school in 1945. She attended Minot State Teachers College and taught in a small school in Niobe, ND and Esmond, ND moving to Towner, ND in 1949 and teaching in the 4th Grade.

While in Towner she met Frank Martian and they were married on August 8, 1950. She was married 45 years until her husband’s death in 1996. She continued to reside in Towner until 2017 when with declining health moved to Bismarck.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church for the 68 years she lived in Towner. She developed a strong bond for her church and its parishioners and a great love for her neighbors and the Towner community. She served on the church council and was active in bible study and the church affiliated quilters group. Her favorite hobby was sewing quilts for high school graduating seniors from church along with quilts for Metigoshe Ministries, and foreign missions.

She was also active over her years in Towner in various Homemakers Clubs and Darners Club. She was also active in Cub Scouts.

Katherine was noted for her baking talents especially buns which she brought to many church events. She was also an excellent cook with chicken dumpling soup, one of her specialties.

We wish to thank the Primrose staff in Bismarck for all their help and kindness over the past four years. Katherine grew to consider this home and the staff and residents as family. She became a friend to those she met and will be missed.

She is survived by sons, Daniel (Candace), David (Karla), Blaine (Diane), and Wayne (Patricia); 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Paulson, Louise (Ralph) Olson, and Arla Anderson; sisters-in-law, Alice Wack, Jane Gerlach, Betty Wentz; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and brothers, Walter, Donald, and Albert.

A memorial service for Katherine will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2021 at the Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

The family requests no flowers and if you prefer a memorial may be sent to a charity of your choice.
