Jean Stewart was a beloved grandmother, mother, sister, aunt, and friend during her incredible 97 years of life.  She passed away on December 21, 2022, surrounded by her family, at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, ND.

Jean’s funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 7th, 2023, at 1:00 pm at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, in St. John, ND.  The service will also be live streamed and available from the Bismarck Funeral Home website and Facebook Page.  A one-hour visitation and Rosary will be held prior to the service.

Jean was born Hannah Jean Bercier on December 16, 1925, to Jerome and Hannah (Hanlan) Bercier near St. John, ND.  She grew up in St. John and graduated from St. John High School in 1943.  She married Frank Stewart on January 20, 1944, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.  They celebrated their honeymoon in the old Coghlan Castle.  They spent their first 2 years of marriage in Salt Lake City, UT, before returning to St. John in 1946 to raise their family.

Jean worked for the US Post Office for 50 years and served as the Postmaster in St. John from 1982 until she retired in 2012.  Her door was always open for coffee and conversation, and she loved mentoring the high school kids on job shadowing days.

Outside of work, she was an active member of her church’s Christian Mothers organization, as well as the Mountainside Homemakers club.  Jean’s favorite hobbies and activities included volunteering as 4H club leader, baking treats for her many visitors, and doing arts and crafts of any kind.  In her retirement years, she loved going to Bingo with her friends, and beating all who dared play Words with Friends, Yahtzee, Pinochle, or any other card or board game with her.

Jean is survived by son Rodney (Tammy) Stewart of Williston, ND, daughters Kaye & Polly Stewart of Mandan, ND, Janet (Bob) Guinn of Miltona, MN, 5 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and sister Maxine Richard of Mandan, ND.  Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, 1 daughter, and 2 grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in her honor.

We are so sorry to hear of Jean’s passing, but we know she put her trust in the Lord Jesus, so she is basking in the glory of heaven.

My heart is breaking at the loss of precious Jean. She immediately welcomed me in to her fold when I married Roy James. He always referred to her as his second Mom. God bless the memory of Jean.
