He graduated from Langdon High School in 1945 and joined the 164th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. Harvey spent his military service welding tanks in Japan, protected by his mother’s prayers that he would never see war.

Harvey first caught Eleanor Coffey’s attention with a sneaked wink, through the backseat window, of her father’s car; they became bride and groom on June 27, 1954 and raised five children. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Harvey honored the Lord and his community through his leadership in a variety of organizations including: the Presbyterian Church at state, local, and regional levels; Masonic organizations as Past Master for Lebanon Lodge, Eastern Star Grand Sentinel, and State Rainbow Dad; and the State of North Dakota as a two-term Senator (1993-2000). Additionally, he received the Scottish Rite 33 degree.

He was a generous man in many ways, picking up the tab, volunteering with the Langdon Volunteer Fire department, donating his O- blood, and anonymously sending flowers to each Langdon nursing home individual on their birthday. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and pinochle. A life learner, Harvey also loved to teach others to better their circumstances, especially by spreading the Rule of 72.
