25 May Allen “Gene” Wyman, M.D.

It is with great sadness that the family of Allen “Gene” Wyman, M.D., announce his passing. Gene passed away peacefully on May 12, 2023, surrounded by family at Northwest Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.  Memorial services will be on June 9, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Inspire Family Fellowship, Bismarck.  Visitation will be on Thursday, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.  A private burial with military honors will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan

Gene was born on August 14, 1940, in Westhope, North Dakota to Verl and Margaret Wyman. He graduated from Newburg High School in 1958. During high school he achieved his Eagle Scout rank in the Boys Scouts of America. After high school, he received a bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State University in 1962. Following graduation, Gene entered the Navy, where he served as Lieutenant Junior Grade on the USS Kearsarge. Aside from his family, Gene’s time in the Navy gave him the greatest sense of pride and if you ever had the opportunity to talk to Gene about his time in the Navy, he was certain to tell you about the time he met John Wayne on board his Naval ship.

After he was discharged from the Navy in 1965, Gene returned to the family farm, where he worked alongside his father and his brother, until he returned to medical school at the University of North Dakota and then Texas Tech. Following his graduation in 1973, Gene completed his residency at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, WA. Once his residency was complete, Gene moved to Bottineau, ND, where he practiced medicine at Bottineau Medical Clinic and St. Andrew’s Hospital until 1990.

Gene was married to his beloved wife, Linda, on January 1, 1987, in Bottineau, ND, and together they blended their seven children into a family. Gene and Linda shared a deep faith in God. Attending church and daily prayer was a cornerstone of their marriage. In fact, it was this faith that surrounded Gene, as he went Home to his father, that brought peace to his family.  In 1990, Gene and Linda moved to Bismarck, where Gene worked as a physician at Mid Dakota Clinic until his “retirement” in 2010. Once retired, Gene discovered he wasn’t quite ready to hang up his white coat and continued to work part-time at Bottineau Clinic and then Sanford in Minot, ND. Gene finally retired for good in 2020, just in time to move to Green Valley, AZ, where he lived out the remainder of his life with Linda.

Gene enjoyed many hobbies, including hunting, fishing, gardening and golfing. He was happiest when he was with his family and always made time to attend his children’s, and then grandchildren’s, sporting events, dance competitions, choir and band concerts.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Linda; daughters, Christine (Jim) Brown of Highlands Ranch, CO, Jenny Zarak (Dave Kangas) of Boise, ID, Monica (Brett) Ims of Shorewood, MN, Jordan Herbel of Bismarck, ND; sons Patrick (Kirsten) Irey of Bismarck, ND, Aaron (Sarah) Irey of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jason (Stacy) Irey of Bismarck, ND; grandchildren Katie and Spencer Brown, Kennedy and Arleigh Zarak, Gram and Finn Ims, Camryn Harter and Callen Meissner, Markie (Nickoli) Mitchell, Quinn (Bryn) Irey, T.J. Irey, Ty (Olivia) Farnsworth and Greyson Farnsworth, Connor (Shannon) Irey, Haakon, Bergen and Kuper Irey, Cullen, Kirklan and Ella Irey; great-grandson, Luka Mitchell, and two great grandson due this summer; sister Irene “Reenie” Baumann; brother John (Debra) Wyman; sisters-in-law Connie Michaelsen and Pat Kersten; brother-in-law Tim (Marcia) Brandvold; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Verl and Margaret Wyman; father and mother-in-law, Paul and Mabel Brandvold; sister, Margaret Marie Thompson and her husband, Darold; brothers-in-law Vurl Baumann and Jerry Brandvold and Jerry’s wife Margo; sisters-in-law Gloria James and Betty Nelson; and nephew Corey Kersten, great-nephew Levi Nelson and great-niece Brooke Brandvold.
