Ricky L. Weeg, age 62, passed away at Sanford Hospital on November 24, 2018 after an eight-month relentless battle with cancer. Services will be held at Evangel Church, 3225 N 14th Street, Bismarck, ND, on Friday, December 7 at 10:30 a.m., with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the ND Veterans Cemetery.
Rick was born in Sioux Falls, SD on February 10, 1956 to Dale and Eleanor (Siegfried) Weeg, the second oldest of seven children. He received his education in Sioux Falls and then went on to join the U.S. Army at the age of 18.
In 1980 Rick married Colleen Wetzel. Five years later they welcomed their first child, a daughter, Lindsey and in 1992, a son, Shane. In addition to being a father, Rick was also a very proud papa to Reese and Connor Matter, a role that most certainly brought him one of life’s greatest pleasures. Rick was a wonderful husband, father and grandpa and he will be sorely and forever missed by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Rick recently retired from the National Guard on February 9, 2018 and was looking forward to spending leisurely time with his family and being able to spend more time doing some of the things he loved - hunting, fishing and spending time with his hunting buddies.
Rick made friends easily and was very well-liked by all that knew him. He had a kind heart and would do anything for anyone. Rick was blessed with many cherished friendships in his life and those that called him a friend will miss him greatly.
Over the years Rick proudly served his country in many ways. There weren’t too many Memorial Day Services at the Veterans Cemetery where Rick wasn’t there volunteering his time to assist with setup, parking, tear-down or whatever it may have been. He assisted with National Guard Youth Camps, served meals at the AmVets, and many other numerous activities.
Happy to have shared his much too short of a life here on this earth and so sad to see it come to an end are his wife of 38 years, Colleen; their daughter Lindsey (Adam) Matter; their son, Shane; and two ever-so-special grandchildren, Reese and Connor Matter; all of Bismarck. He also leaves three brothers, Dale (Georgette), Wasilla, AK; Tony, Sioux Falls, SD; Randy (Ellen), Missoula, MT; as well as three sisters, Pennee Whitman (Rick); Sherry Lameyer (Dale); and Christy (special friend, Jane), all of Sioux Falls, SD, plus many special in-laws, cousins and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
