Mary Elizabeth Schumaker was born August 23, 1932 in Dawson, ND. She grew up in the Steele, ND area where she met and married Milton Schumaker on September 7, 1948 at Glendive, MT. Together they moved to Bismarck, ND and had two children. Mary worked for the Bismarck Public School System in the kitchen for 27 years. The kids at Myhre always recalled her fondly as the nice lunch lady with the red lipstick and big smile.
Mary had the biggest heart and so much love to give to everyone around her, especially kids and animals. Her ray of sunshine touched many people. She gave never-ending guidance, support and FOOD! She was hard-working and dedicated to whatever she chose to take on. Her strong-willed and inventive personality shined on whatever and whomever she touched. Mary loved spending time with her family and circles of friends playing games, having coffee, rummaging for deals and sharing lots of love and laughter. She loved to garden and can, crochet, cook and bake. She was an avid collector of animal figurines, especially cardinals and dogs. And there isn’t enough space on a page to talk about how much she adored her animals, especially all the dogs. No animal has known more love than one touched by Mary. Especially her own Boston Terrier, Colby. All those in the kingdom of heaven who were there to greet her are getting the best hugs and the brightest smiles right now! That’s why the heavens glistened down to us the day she died.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Terry) Barnes and son, Steven Schumaker, Bismarck, ND; grandchildren, Samantha Barnes (Derek Vollmuth), Nicole (Jim) Nelson, and Jahna (Ross) Gardiner, Bismarck, ND; and her beloved six great grandchildren, Ethan, Taylor, Jillian, Cora, Rylee and Braylyn.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Milton, several other close family and friends and of course all her dogs especially her boy, Colby.
Mary passed away April 1, 2025 at the age of 92. Funeral services will be held April 4, 2025 at 1:30 PM at Bismarck Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
