KEVIN S. MICKELSON M.D.

Kevin Scott Mickelson, M.D., 63, Bismarck, ND passed away suddenly but peacefully July 15, 2019 at St. Alexius Medical Center in the presence of his loved ones and St. Alexius family.  A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Saturday, July 20, at 10:00 am.  Burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Bismarck.

Visitation will be held at Bismarck Funeral Home, Friday, July 19, from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Kevin was born May 13, 1956 in Fargo, ND to Ruth and Don Mickelson. He graduated from Fargo Shanley High School followed by four years at North Dakota State University with a degree in Zoology.  He then went on to earn his Medical Degree from the University of North Dakota followed by a residency in Emergency Medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Kevin successfully practiced Emergency Medicine in both Fargo and Bismarck where he touched many lives with his kindness, compassion, big heart and desire to truly help mankind. Kevin’s deep empathy and passion for medicine earned him a spot in the hearts of many patients, many of whom went out of their way to thank him for his humane and kind approach.

Although medicine was a significant talent and love of Kevin, his love for his family was evident in his words and actions. Despite his busy schedule, Kevin always made time for his family by coaching baseball, enjoying Minnesota lakes, playing the guitar, singing to his kids and dishing out the biggest hugs just when you needed them. He loved fishing the Missouri River and playing ball with his dogs. He was a passionate philosopher and always enjoyed deep intuitive conversations with loved ones and even strangers. Hospitality in the form of a home cooked meal, including smoked prime rib or sous vide cooked steak, were expressions of Kev’s favorite culinary talents.  The fireworks display from the Mickelson home on the river were an annual tradition enjoyed by many.

He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Colette of Bismarck; three sons, Nathan (Melissa) and Scot of Bismarck, and David (Dani) Mickelson of Kearney, NE; six siblings, Dan (Kim) Mickelson, Fargo, ND; Todd (Peggy) Mickelson, Fargo, ND; Tom (Becky) Mickelson, Rochester, MN; Rick (Kelly) Mickelson, Cottage Grove, MN; Deborah Mickelson, Fargo, ND; and Veronica (Rose) Ahern, Minneapolis, MN; he is also survived by four nieces and seven nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ruth and Don Mickelson and his brother David Mickelson.
