Harold “Harry” J. Kolberg, 82, of Bismarck, passed away January 14, 2025.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Bismarck Funeral Home. Family will be greeting guests one hour prior to the service. The burial will follow the service at 2:00 PM at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND
Harry was born to John and Marie (Zahn) Kolberg on December 16, 1942, in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Education was important to Harold, who completed one year of seminary school, pursued a two-year degree from Bismarck State College (BSC), and earned a four-year degree from North Dakota State University (NDSU). His connection to NDSU continued as he enjoyed supporting NDSU Football.
Harry had a varied and distinguished career. He worked as a salesman at Standard Motor Products and also owned his own mechanic shop, named Kar Kraft. His fondness for cars was reflected not just in his career but also in his hobbies; he was deeply engaged in car racing, building custom vehicles—including a homemade sports car—and tinkering with engines. Harry often expressed joy in the open road and the powerful roar of an engine, embodying the spirit of the automotive culture he cherished.
In addition to his work in the automotive industry, Harry dedicated his time to volunteer activities. He was actively involved with Easter Seals and provided support for disaster relief efforts with the Red Cross. His service also extended to the military; Harry enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1964, serving honorably as a medic until his discharge in 1970, holding the rank of Specialist 5 (SP5 E5).
Harry’s hobbies extended beyond vehicles; he had a keen interest in cowboy shooting and was involved in painting and art. Notably, he took pride in being part of the disabled veteran honor guard, further exemplifying his commitment to service.
He is survived by his children, Jon (Sarah) Kolberg and Courtney (Jake) Hansen); stepchildren, Dale (Ronda) Colby and Christine Colby; grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley, Monte, Rueben, Isaac, Thomas, Madison, Preston and Carter, as well as six great-grandchildren; and siblings Jack, Joseph, and Jeanette.
Harry is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dorothy and Adeline; and brothers Edward and Rodger.
