Glenn D. Schmidt

Glenn Dean Schmidt 76, passed away peacefully on February 13th, 2025 at the Missouri Slope on Hillview in Bismarck, ND. He was surrounded by his family after a long battle with Parkinson’s.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will follow at 3:00 PM at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND. The family will be greeting guests one hour prior to the service.

Glenn was born August 21, 1948 to Elmer and Agnes Schmidt in Harvey, ND. He was raised on a farm outside Anamoose, ND where he attended school. He joined the Army in 1967 and served in Germany during the Vietnam Era until his honorable discharge in 1969. Upon his arrival back home he met Teddy Mehl of Drake, ND and on the coldest day of the year, December 20th, 1970 they were married.

For the next couple of years they made their home in Minot, ND and expanded their family with the first of their three children, Scott. Glenn joined the local 1091 Carpenters Union around this time working in various locations. In 1972 the family packed up and moved to Underwood, ND where they made their home for the next 51 years. They added a second son, Jason to the family and Glenn then began working in the construction industry, wearing many hats during the power plant boom. In the next few years, they completed their family with the birth of their daughter, Glenda.

Glenn was a member of the Drake American Legion post #32, Anamoose VFW and Augustana Lutheran Church.

As the years passed, many opportunities came and went but the decision to work with a company that would later be known as Westcon Industries arose. He proudly worked for the company until his retirement in 2017.

When Glenn wasn’t at work, he was likely at home still tinkering around on something from fixing cars, building something with his hands or doing any type of yardwork, he always kept busy. I mean, who knew there was only one acceptable way to mow the lawn or shovel snow? Glenn also really enjoyed traveling with his siblings, a winning day at the casino and a good old fashioned car show. If you asked a person what they most remembered about him, it would surely be said that he was always so meticulously ‘put together’ with perfectly set hair and the most twinkly blue eyes.

Family is so important to Glenn. He was survived by his wife of 54 years, Theodora Schmidt of Bismarck, ND; sons, Scott (Missy) Schmidt of Lisbon, ND and Jason (Amanda) Schmidt of Underwood, ND; daughter, Glenda (Glenn) Earl of Bismarck, ND; five grandchildren, Payton (Cordell) Bender, Kyndra (Jacob) Aberle, Ethan Earl (Kayla Weigum), Jaden Schmidt and Ella Schmidt; three great grandchildren, Nashton and Shara Bender, and Tate Aberle; siblings, Mary Jane Schmidt (Tom Graham), Kathy (Leroy) Becker, Jim (Monica) Schmidt and Stacy Schmidt; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol Oster, Barbara Hilber and Mark (Jackie) Mehl; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Agnes and Elmer Schmidt; mother and father-in-law Sam and Ella Mehl; nephews, Chris and Chad Becker; brothers-in-law, Bert Hilber and Jerry Oster; and special family friend, Lowell Varberg.

His family will miss his infectious smile, sneaky humor and his endless life lessons. Hunting season was hands down his favorite season of the year by far and boy will we be missing the stories of those days.

Special thank you to the staff at Missouri Slope on Hillview along with CHI Hospice team and the individuals at Home Instead for the exceptional love and care they provided for our dad for the last year and a half. It has been a long journey but we will be forever grateful for your support.
