Esther Sandum, 96, Bismarck, passed away on November 12, 2018. Memorial services will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., at the Bismarck Funeral Home. Family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the start of the service. Interment will be held in Thief River Falls, in the spring when Esther will be laid to rest beside her husband, Harold.
Esther was born on March 28, 1922, in Fargo, ND and adopted as an infant by John and Josephine Haughom. Two older brothers, Irvin and Mel, were waiting to greet her. She attended school in Fargo, Hendrum, MN, and Thief River Falls, MN, graduating in 1939. During WWII, Esther moved to Los Angeles, CA, and was a secretary at Lockheed Aircraft.
The day after her twenty first birthday, she married Harold Sandum on March 29, 1943 in Minnesota, while he was on Army furlough. Soon after that she returned to the west coast. After the war the couple moved back to their hometown of Thief River Falls, where their daughter Jan (Jechort) was born.
In 1956, having lived four years in Mobridge, SD, the family moved to Langdon, ND, to manage Skogmo’s Department Store, later named Sandum’s. She often said, moving to Langdon was the best thing they ever did, and she loved it there. After retiring in 1979, Esther enjoyed entertaining and golfing at their winter home in Green Valley, AZ. They spent summers at their cabin on Big Raspberry Island on Lake of the Woods in Ontario. Visitors always enjoyed Esther’s delicious walleye dinners. Harold passed away in 1995, and having health issues, Esther moved from Langdon to Bismarck in 2002 to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law. At the time of her death, she was living in assisted living at Edgewood on Dominion in Bismarck.
Esther leaves behind a grateful daughter: Jan Jechort; nieces and nephews: Lynda (Jim) Hawkinson, Bruce (Rosalie) Eldevik, Rick Mattson (Jerry Johnson), Karen Bailey, Barbara (Bob) Karp, Betty Gulsvig, and Paul and John Haughom. Also missing Esther will be Larry (Brenda) Jechort and family, plus special friend, Kevin McNeal.
Esther was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold; son-in-law: Loren, brothers: Irvin (Estelle) and Mel (Arline).
