Duane was born February 9, 1930 in Bismarck to Nina (Navratil) and Leon Berger. He was raised in Glen Ullin, ND and graduated from Glen Ullin High School in 1947. He started working for Northwestern Bell (NWB)Telephone immediately after high school as a technician. He joined the US Navy, January 2, 1951, where he continued to hone his electrical technician and communication skills. He received an honorable discharge on October 15, 1954. Duane resumed employment with NWB in Grand Forks upon returning from service. He married Yvonne Lee Uhas, September 29, 1956 in Grand Forks, ND. He was transferred to Bismarck and retired as a Regional Sales Manager in 1982. After retiring, Duane consulted for NWB, managed a leasing company, started an insurance company for a friend, managed a grain elevator construction company, and was a handyman for hire for several decades.
Duane loved hunting, fishing, camping, whist and golf, especially with his sons and others family members. He was a well-rounded handyman capable of all crafts required to upgrade and maintain a home. He completed many projects for his wife Yvonne, and for many other friends of the family. He enjoyed passing these loves and skills to his five boys and was frequently invited for extended visits to his children’s homes to assist in remodels, brick patio, or decking projects. The do-it-yourself mindset has been well instilled in his children and grandchildren.
Duane was a charter member of the Bismarck Hockey Boosters, involved from the beginning with organized hockey in Bismarck, including helping to build our first indoor sheet of ice.
Duane especially enjoyed annual family gatherings at Tamarac Bay Resort at Island Lake, MN. This was a six-decade long tradition of boating, water skiing, fishing, card games, bocce ball, and family feasting that continues to this day. He also looked forward to an annual fall fishing trip with his sons and grandsons. Duane and Yvonne would spend a month each year at Marco Island, FL to shorten the long ND winters.
Duane’s children are thankful and so very blessed to have a father that created a legacy built on virtue, integrity, honesty, hard work, and reverence to the Lord. Duane was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Church in Bismarck.
Duane “Big Dad” was most proud of his wife, Yvonne; sons: Mark (Nancy), Bismarck, Mitch (Terri), Eagan, MN, Mike (Keri), White Bear, MN, Jeff (Sandi), Woodbury, MN, and John (Robynn), Bismarck. Duane was blessed with, and so loved, his 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren (with three more on the way). Duane is also survived by his sister, Elaine McGrath of Fargo, ND.
Duane was beautifully cared for at CHI St. Alexius by many wonderful doctors, nurses, religious and aids. Just prior to his passing, several family members had just finished praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet at his bedside. Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Have Mercy on Us, and on the Whole World.
Duane was preceded in death by parents Leon & Nina Berger.
The family requests no flowers. Memorials can be made to St. Mary’s Central High School.
