Cody James was born on March 16, 1986, to Jerry and Marcia (Hager) Schmidt. He attended Northridge Elementary and Wachter Middle School, graduating in 2004 from Bismarck High School. Cody worked as a CNA and van driver at various nursing homes for over 20 years. His most recent occupation was as a van driver at Northland PACE. The love, kindness, compassion and care he gave to all his residents went unmatched.
Cody met Sarah Kraft in 2015 while they both were working at St. Vincent’s Care Center, he as a CNA, and her as a dietary aid in the kitchen. Cody said it took so long for him to learn her name because her name tag was always flipped around. He thought she was a sweet and beautiful lady who would probably not go out with him, as they had a 10-year age difference. Cody’s sense of humor, bright, beautiful smile, broad shoulders, and sweet disposition won over Sarah, not to mention how handsome he looked in scrubs.
Cody and Sarah were 3 days shy of their wedding when Cody went to meet our Heavenly Father. They were so excited to finally be married, live together, and build a family. Cody talked about having kids all the time, and he would have made the most wonderful father.
Cody loved his family dearly. He treasured the relationship he had with his parents and brother Justin. Cody cared for his mother at home after she was diagnosed with cancer in 2017. Cody rearranged his work schedule multiple times, working long hours a few days a week so he could be with his mother as much as possible. He tenderly cared for her until she passed away on July 12 th , 2017.
Cody loved motorcycle riding, often going on trips with his family and friends. Although he had given up motorcycle riding in the past few years, he still loved being outdoors. He loved spending time with family and the many friends he made over the years that were all near and dear to his heart.
Cody is survived by the love of his life, Sarah Kraft, his father Jerry Schmidt, brother Justin Schmidt (Bobbi), Sarah’s parents William & Mary Kraft, future sister-in-law Amy Kraft, step-nephew Brycen, step-niece Riley and many aunts, uncles, & cousins. He also leaves behind his beloved cats, Thora and Bob, who brought him so much companionship.
He was preceded in death by his mother Marcia, grandparents James & Helen Schmidt, and Anton & Ann Hager.
Cody’s faith was very important to him. After losing his mom, Cody started making an effort to pray often for the souls of the departed. His family ask for your prayers for his soul and the souls of those who have gone before him. They would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time.
