BRUCE BARLOW SKOGEN

Bruce Barlow Skogen, a proud outdoorsman, grandfather, woodworker, and husband passed away May 29, 2019, with family at his side. He was 82. A memorial service will take place at Bismarck Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m, Tuesday, June 4th. Burial to follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan at noon.

Bruce was born on July 9, 1936 to Henry and Arlene Skogen in Hettinger, ND. As a boy, he was “Pinky” to many on account of his strawberry-blonde hair. Bruce met the love of his life, Barbara, in 1955 at his parents’ Mobil service station where he worked as an attendant and she would work as café waitress. After a 3 year courtship, they were married in 1958 — celebrating 60 years together this last year.

Bruce and Barbara welcomed their daughter, Linda, to the world in 1965. A proud and loving father, he took her on countless outdoor adventures.

He was an active outdoorsman and hobbyist, enjoying hunting, hiking, fishing, boating, motorcycle trips, woodworking, and even cave explorations with Barb.

Bruce and Barb moved to Bismarck in 1970 where Bruce would work as a manager for Ed Phillips & Sons. Avid antiquers, they ran the Dakota Midwest Flea Market and Antiques on Main together for many years. Bruce restored countless heirloom pieces of furniture to their most beautiful state.

He adored his role of grandpa to two granddaughters: Cady and Courtney. He will be remembered fondly for their time spent together digging in the garden, sharing sweet treats, feeding his birds, and learning about their family history. He treasured his two great-granddaughters, Ella and Lucy.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughter, Linda (Jason); his granddaughters, Cady (Jonathan) and Courtney (Eric); and his two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Arlene, and his older brother, Duane Skogen.

A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor, and friend, he will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite wildlife or conservation non-profit.
