Bernice (Berdie) Hickel passed away at Sanford Medical Center on October 24,2018 after a short illness. A memorial service will be held at 11am on October 30, 2018 at Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Union Cemetary in rural Burleigh County.
Bernice Wanttaja was born on November 7, 1926 to Sten William Wanttaja and Clara E. Olson in Bismarck, ND. She was raised on the family farm near Wing, ND. She graduated from Wing High School. She obtained her teaching certificate and taught school at several rural schools.
She married Wayne Hickel in Wibaux, MT on July 3, 1946. They raised three children, DuWayne, Eugene, and Sandra.
After retirement, Berdie worked at Seeds of Hope Thrift Store and at Aid, Incorporated until May 2018.
Berdie was a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved spending time with her family and was happiest when doing so. She enjoyed shopping and playing Bingo with her friends. Berdie loved going to Horse Shows and watching her grandchildren and then great grandchildren compete. She was a die-hard Minnesota Twins Fan and rarely missed a game.
Berdie is survived by her children, Gene (Cheryl) Hickel, Klamuth Falls, OR and Sandy (Erv) Jacobson, Mandan, her daughter-in-law, Cleo Hickel, Lincoln, ND, her grandchildren, Kraig (Heather) Hickel ,Winnepeg Canada, Kara Hickel (Dustin Masseth) Heidi (Will) Leach, Josh Hickel, all of Bismarck, Faith Johnson, Holly (Brandon) Mancebo, Nathan Hickel, all of Klamuth Falls, OR, Chad Hickel, Renton, WA, Shauna (Luke) Voigt, Cody (Michelle)Jacobson, Brittany (Pat) Kuntz all of Mandan, Jesse Jacobson (Korissa Orvick) Bismarck,and 19 great grandchildren, one brother Willys Wanttaja, Pryor Lake, MN, and her sister-in-law, Karen Regner, Rice, MN,
Berdie was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Kenneth Wanttaja, her husband, Wayne Hickel, and son DuWayne Hickel, and sister-in-law Grace Wanttaja.
