Bernie was born on March 13, 1933 the daughter of Martin Mitzel and Margaret (Schwartzenberger) Mitzel in Napoleon. Bernie and her husband Bennie were married on September 29, 1956 in Napoleon, where they lived until moving to Bismarck in 1966.
She worked at Fraine Barracks for 23 years as a procurement specialist. She loved her job and made a lot of friends over the years. Bernie’s interests included playing pinochle and Yahtzee, and many more card games. She loved to cook for friends and family, and if someone came over to the house, they were invited to stay for supper. She loved children and her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Bernie was a kind, caring, thoughtful and humorous person. She was the life of the party when she entered a room with a contagious laugh. She always had a smile on her face for strangers and friends, even through adversity. She had a quick wit about her, and was great at telling jokes and making people laugh.
Bernie is survived by her son Steve and daughter-in-law Kathe, and two grandchildren, Mitchel and Tayler Fettig. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bennie; two sons, Marty and Bennett; one sister, Florence and one brother, Bob; brothers-in-law Bob Wentz and Andy (Wendy) Fettig; and sisters-in-law Eva Meyer and Margaret Kasch.
