Alvin “Al” Herman, 100, of Bismarck, was lifted into the arms of Jesus on May 13, 2024. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Rev. Bill Rindy officiating. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. A livestream of the service will be held on the Bismarck Funeral Home website.
Alvin was born on Feb. 11, 1924 in Macintosh county, ND on the family farmstead to Gottfried and Amelia (Merkel) Herman.
Alvin met school teacher Esther Burrer and was immediately star-struck. They married June 1, 1947 and to this union sons Steven and Bruce were born. Together they lived in Sidney, MT before moving to Riverdale, ND where dad was a carpenter foreman for the intake structure on the Garrison Dam. From there they moved to Bismarck for the rest of his life. He found his true passion was sales and traveled the state stopping at every school selling school supplies. This eventually led to him starting his own contract company called Institutional Products Company. He eventually sold the company in 1984 and retired at the ripe age of 60.
After dad retired they spent 30 years as Arizona snowbirds. It was during this time that dad became a very accomplished wood carver. When back home in ND they enjoyed camping and lots of time at their favorite place, the lake cabin at Lake Isabel.
Alvin is survived by his wife of almost 77 years, Esther, sons, Steven (Marcia) Herman, Bruce (Lucilda) Herman, grandchildren, Chad (Pam) Herman, Scott (Kimberly) Herman, Jeremy Herman, Michael Herman, Tyler (Karissa) Herman, greatgrandchildren, Cameron, Colton, Grace, Liam, Blaire, Kaylin and Kya Herman and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Oscar and Hugo, sisters, Edna Doctor and Delores Becker and one granddaughter-in-law, Dana.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. The family wishes a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff of Sanford Health and Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for the wonderful care.
