Jim went to Magnum Truck Driving Institute where he obtained his CDL license. He went on to work for Bowerly Brothers and then Knife River.  He was currently employed with Earthwork Services.  In 2006 he was united in marriage with Heather Hull. Although this marriage did not last, it brought forth 3 beautiful children who were the light of Jim’s life.

Jim loved to do many things with his family. It always brought joy to him, whether it be board games, talking, cooking. He liked to do many things outdoors, including hunting and fishing. He was fascinated by cars, especially ones of older models. There wasn’t a question you could ask him, and he didn’t have the answer when it came to cars.

He is survived by his 3 children, Emma Jean, James Lawrence Jr, and Alexander John Mathis, all of Bismarck; siblings, Sue (Mike) Andersen of St Paul, MN, Mike (Dede) Schwanke of Little Falls, MN, Rick (Kris) Schwanke of Little Falls, MN, Sandy (John) Morgan of Roaring Spring, PA, Jacqui (Tim) Shoemaker of Kansas City, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews that are too many to individually mention. Many of which include his godchild, Tyler Jerome Schwanke.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Jean Mathis; sibling, Robert Schwanke, paternal grandparents, John and Sarah Mathis, maternal grandparents- Orville and Adona VanNorman, many paternal aunts and uncles.
