Jeanne: I am so sorry about John. My thoughts are with you. Take care. Colette
I knew John in my capacity as the government relations person assigned to North Dakota. John was ever so gracious, a pleasure to work with and had the ultimate in sense of humor. We at LexisNexis will miss John and send his family, friends and colleagues our condolences.
Jeanne, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Ashley
Jeanne, Jesse, and family, I'm so sorry for your loss and will be keeping you all in my thoughts. Wishing you peace and comfort during such a difficult time.
Jeanne - North Dakota has lost a bright light. John was one of a kind in the way he could get a room to listen, understand and ultimately agree with with him on how to address difficult issues. He was kind and always willing to help, and I enjoyed working with him over the years. You are in my thoughts.
John was one of my favorite people from my days with the Legislative Council. The world is going to be a little less bright without him around. My condolences to his family and friends.
I was sorry to hear of John's passing. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. "Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted." Bob and Elizabeth Martin--Minot
Jeanne, my family sends our condolences. I went to school with John 7-12th grade and he was always a great guy. I am also part of the Las Vegas group and we cherish John joining us in 2013. I remember the smile on John’s face when he led us to the Las Vegas Pinball Hall of Fame. He really enjoyed playing the old machines. In November we will return to the Pinball Hall of Fame in John’s honor. Greg and Lu Anne Luck
I am so very saddened at John's loss. I so enjoyed working with John during his many years in Legislative Council. John was such an excellent lawyer and an icon in state government. He was so highly respected and well-liked. He was always willing to help. It was always such a pleasure to just visit with John about work or anything. I know John could have done anything with his legal career and so many are fortunate that he spent it with Legislative Council. He will be greatly missed. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
It was great spending time with John & you this summer. He was a always a great friend. He loved his family, friends and his baseball. It was so great that you guys made the trip to Cooperstown in July! John will surely be missed. My condolences to you & the boys on your loss. Greg & Becky Gehrke
Jeanne and family; I am so sorry for your loss. John was one of my first friends and mentors when I started my legal career. He was such a joy to work with and he had such thorough understanding of the law and policy as well as the Legislative process and Legislators. He was always willing to provide insights and assistance. He was a wonderful, wonderful man and his passing is a great loss to us all.
Jeanne and family, I am so sorry for your loss. John was such a kind man, quick to smile and offer a friendly hello, and always willing to provide assistance. He always was more than willing to help me; he was a great historian for the law, policy and legislative history. I always looked forward to his scholarly insight. He was a bright light in life and will greatly be missed. You all will be in my prayers during this difficult time.
Jeanne -- I wish I knew what to say. I've known John since law school days, and his kindness coupled with wisdom and knowledge made him a special person. It's a sad time. Gail
I am so sorry for your loss. I got to know John when I worked at the state. He was always willing to answer questions from a baby lawyer trying to figure out bill drafting and rule making. He would always greet me in the hallways and had something funny to say. When he talked in a legislative committee hearing, everyone listened. He could explain very complicated things in a way everyone could understand. He was one of a kind. He will be very missed by many.
Jeannie and family - Thinking of you, wishing you hope in the midst of sorrow, and comfort in the midst of pain. John was a great guy and I feel so blessed to have known him. He really was a mentor to me as we struggled through drafting tax law together, which always occurred during the "Best Session Ever!" My thoughts and prayers are with you - Dee Wald
Jeanne, I am so very sorry to hear of John's passing. My heart is heavy and I pray you may find peace during this extremely difficult time. After John retired, I miss visiting with him and his "Hey Lana" in the hallways at the capitol. He was an amazing man and will be truly missed by so many. Please take care and know I am thinking of you. Lana
Jeanne, Jesse, and family: I was very saddened to hear of your loss, and am thinking of you during this difficult time. Prayers for you and all of John's family and friends. Neil
Jeanne: I am very sorry to hear of John's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Leah
A sad day for the law school class of 1978. John was one of a kind. He brought humor when needed most. We are celebrating our 40 year reunion in November in Grand Forks. He will be missed but with us in spirit. My condolences to the family.
I am very sorry to hear about your loss, Walstad family. Sending thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. God bless.
I only had one personal encounter with John. I was explaining a bill draft to a legislator who was confused and asked the John Walstad be called in to help them understand what it meant. I could tell there was a level of respect for this man by the demeanor change in all those in the room when John entered and addressed the committee. He tactfully addressed their concerns and did so as to not step on any toes including mine, who he didn’t even know. It a good memory of an obviously great man.
I got to know and respect John when I served in the North Dakota legislature. He was a great guy who could explain complex topics, so all could understand. I always enjoyed running into John in the Capitol halls and just talking. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
John was a talented but fun staff person of the legislature where I served with him from the beginning of his career. I still miss him.Family and friends will have a big open space to fill with John not in the daily picture. No doubt you are all prepared to do it because John taught us all to be confident in ourselves. Senator Tim Mathern
I am sorry for your loss. John was a great person and always good for many laughs. Prayers for your family.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of John's death. It was my pleasure to work side by side with him for 27 years at the Legislative Council. John Walstad was one of a kind. He evoked confidence in all who encountered him in the legislative process. He was a lawyer's lawyer, and developed expertise in whatever areas of the law he was involved with, especially tax law and administrative rules. He was in demand, and many legislators wanted him to staff their committees. But aside from his professional career, John was always the life of the party, and if there was no party, he made one just by his presence. He could bring humor to any occasion. So Jeanne, Jesse, Daniel, and Matthew, please understand we share your grief.
Jeanne and family - John was a very reliable and dedicated resource to me in better understanding the ND legislative process. I greatly appreciated over the years his openness and willingness to discuss any issue, no matter how complicated, and also to provide suggestions for improvement in such an understandable and friendly way. He was obviously a very dedicated professional with his work responsibilities also mentoring and serving as a positive role model to others. My condolences to his family.
My dear Jeanne, You have my deepest sympathy. John was a giant in the legal community. He was fun in law school and found the fun in his long career at Legislative Council. His persona is captured perfectly in his obit. While I read it I could hear him laugh, see his laid back grin, and hear his candid thoughts on an issue. He leaves a large void in our community. We all loved him. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the boys. DeNae
Such a fine man, excellent attorney and great public servant. Fun to be with, reliable and so very smart.
I know John from when I worked in the State Capitol some years ago. I would see him in the elevator and hallways as we went about our duties. He was always positive and provided a bright spot in the day. A smile and a few words of encouragement were the rewards that he offered. He was a good person who served North Dakota well. My sincere condolences go to his family.
Jeanne and family - I am sorry to hear of your loss. You will be in my thoughts at this difficult time.
From the day I met John, he became a friend. We always found time to talk Twins and baseball in general. He was an absolute professional in his job and treated everyone with respect. Rest in peace John!!!!
I was so sad to hear of John’s passing. I worked with him in the Legislature since 1994 and came to not only appreciate his professionalism, wisdom, creativity, and competence as a bill drafter, commmittee counsel and chief code revisor, but also his warmth, positive attitude and friendship. I missed him greatly last year, during his first absence from a Legislative session, but appreciated calling him to discuss ideas, even then. He will be sorely missed by many. Rest In Peace, John!
Jeanne and family, My heart sank when I saw that John passed. What a fantastic man. I can't imagine how difficult this must be. Sending thoughts, prayers, and condolences.
It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of my friend. My most enduring memory of John, other than his masterful rendition of “Ringling Lil,” will be the always calm cadence of his voice that projected humor, keen intellect, deep insight, and pithy wisdom. We all hope that his family will find some solace from their unimaginable loss by their knowledge that John was admired and respected by all who knew him. We are all better to have known him, yet lessened by his passing.
What a wonderful life as outlined in the obit.! I was a law school classmate of Wally's. He was one of the few people that made the first year not only tolerable but fun! I played various intramural sports with him in law school as well including both softball and basketball. I will never forget first semester finals when standing in line to receive our exam (remember you only have one test per class and the stress is significant), and Wally started his own version of "name that tune" but suggesting that he could write that test in so many minutes. this tradition continued throughout law school. When our last year was winding down, several of us retreated to Lake Melissa for what we called the "bar (s) review". Wally entertained us all by standing on the bar at Hotel Shoreham and reciting the exploits of Ringling 'Lil! Unforgettable. So sorry to hear about his untimely death. He will be sorely missed by all and especially at our 40 year law school reunion scheduled for this fall. Regards, Bruce and Robbie Quick.
Dear Jeanne and family, John was such a wonderful person. He always provided us with a laugh. His kind spirit will be missed. Peace be with you all.
Dear Jeanne, Darwin and I met you at a couple of Minot High class reunions. John and I started school at Lincoln Grade School and graduated in 1970 from MHS. He was always such a nice person and we always enjoyed visiting with him. We send our sympathy. Nancy (Erickson) and Darwin Langseth
Jeanne and family: so sorry to hear about John. We remember all the Boy Scout Meetings at your house when our boys were little. All the fun times at Grimsrud Grage school. Our heart ❤️ goes out to you at this time. Memories live on. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Paul and Julie Barth
