She was born Betty Jane Harrington in Merkel Township, Kidder County, North Dakota on February 28, 1929. She spent her childhood years on the farm with her parents, brother Earl and sister Arlene. She shared her many memories and fascinating stories of her farm life with her children and grandchildren.

The family moved into Robinson, ND, where Betty attended high school. She was an excellent student and athlete, playing for the girls high school basketball team.  After high school, Betty attended Valley City State College and earned her teacher’s certificate.

In 1984, they relocated back to Robinson to run the town cafe. Betty was an excellent cook. Her knoephle soup was well known throughout the county.  On retirement, John and Betty moved to Lincoln, ND.
