Virgil K. Smith, 83, Bismarck, died June 17, 2017 in a Bismarck care center. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 21 at Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Cremation has taken place and no viewing will be held.
Virgil was born on August 6, 1933 to Harry and Eva (Peterson) Smith in Mandan, ND. He was raised and educated in Mandan and attended Mandan High School. On a lovely day, May 8, 1954, he married his loving wife, Edna Hellwig. He served on the Gibbs Township Board and was a supervisor of the road commission. Virgil received an honorary plaque from the FFA, honoring him as a father of a FFA member.
He worked odd jobs at local businesses and helped farmers until his partnership with his father on the family farm, east of Bismarck. Following his retirement in 1997, Virgil and Edna moved to Bismarck.
He is survived by his wife, Edna, Bismarck; daughter, Ginger (Kerry) Wilkens; sons, Richard (Gayle) Smith, Virgil A. Smith, and Mark (ReNae) Smith; 11 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-step grandchildren; and his sister Lois Brogan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and a brother.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for the wonderful care they gave Virgil.
