Vernon John Baszler, 90, died Friday, February 23, 2018 at the Knife River Care Center in
Beulah, ND. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 2 at the Bismarck Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Veterans Cemetery in Mandan at 1:00 PM.
Vernon was born February 12, 1928 in Hazen, ND, the son of John and Ella (Baerwald) Baszler. He was raised on a farm northeast of Hazen that was homesteaded by his paternal grandparents, who were born in Germany and immigrated from Russia. Vern enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and served two tours of duty during the Korean conflict. He was very proud of his service to his country and remained active in Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion activities throughout his life. Vern first met Alice Schramm, Hazen, at a dance in Beulah. They married on September 19, 1948. After his service in the military he returned to Hazen, where he worked at a local grain elevator then continued in the grain business for 23 years at Dunn Center, ND, Mott, ND, and Minot, ND. Vern then spent 22 years working in the human services field as Manager and Executive Director of Community Action Agency in Bismarck, until he retired in 1998. What he liked best about his various jobs was working with all types of people and helping them help themselves.
Outside of work Vern liked spending time with family, especially taking special trips to do so, reading, playing cards (especially pinochle and cribbage), golfing (anywhere he could), and hunting (especially on his beloved homestead farm on the Missouri breaks northeast of Hazen). He liked golf because it was not about winning or losing but about how one plays the game. He had a special fondness for his 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and truly enjoyed and treasured his time with each of them. Vernon was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck and a life member of the Elks Lodge.
Vern is survived by his wife Alice of 69 years; his children Bonnie (Mike) Krause of Hazen, and Tim (Stephanie) Baszler of Moscow, ID; his grandchildren Kristin Krause of Hazen, Susan (Chad) Drath of Weldon Spring, MO, Lauren (Chance) Leiseth of Walnut Creek, CA, and Michael Baszler of Burbank, CA; his three great-grandchildren Sydney Larson and Kyle Larson of Hazen, and Mya Drath of Weldon Spring; his sister Betty Daly of Mesa, AZ and his brother Jim Baszler of DeSmet, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Wayne and Myron, and sister Elaine Richter.
Memorials may be designated to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck or the Knife River Care Center, Beulah.
