Thomas Nielsen passed from this life to his Eternal home after a struggle with complications of diabetes on July 7, 2017. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 18, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan at 1:00 p.m.
Visitation will be Monday, July 17, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home with a rosary/vigil service at 7:00.
Tom was born in Fargo, ND to Peter S. and Christine (Thomas) Nielsen, October 13, 1926. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served in the Asian theater from October 1944-1946.
He then attended the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota College of Law. In his career he worked for Social Security in Minot, practiced law in Bismarck and Harvey, served as a law librarian for the North Dakota Supreme Court, University of Florida and a law firm in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the Lamoure County Judge from 1976-1982 and then Hearing Officer for the North Dakota Highway Department until he retired.
While attending graduate school in Minneapolis, he met and married his wife of 50 years, Esther Schelinder Nielsen.
He is survived by his wife, along with his three children and four grandchildren: Thomas Jr. (Carolyn) Gagel Nielsen, and their children, Logan and Erin, of Parrish, FL; Elizabeth “Beth” Nielsen and Jeremy Voeller, of Bismarck, her children Dion Schulz of Fargo and Shelby Rooker, Bismarck, and Jeremy’s children, Erin and Ryan; and Audie Morrison-Nielsen of Bismarck. He also is survived by his 34 foster children, many who had special needs, and also many other “children: who would stay with them when they were in need.
