Susan Jean Benson, 62, Bismarck, died Friday June 15, 2018 at Sanford Medical Center, Bismarck, after a short battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held be Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck.
Susan was born January 5, 1956 in Harvey, ND to Joyce (Turner) and Henry Newgard. In 1962, the family moved to West Fargo, where Susan attended public school, graduating high school in 1974. During her years in school, Susan taught baton twirling classes to young girls, was a WSI Instructor teaching swimming lessons, and was a lifeguard during the summers at the outdoor pool in West Fargo.
On June 18, 1977, Susan married her high school sweetheart, Nelson (Buzz) Benson, at Faith Lutheran Church in West Fargo, ND. In 1978, Susan graduated with a degree in Nursing from Jamestown College. She went on to work for several years in hospital and home health nursing. Her nursing career started at St. Ansgar Hospital, Moorhead, MN, and Cass County Public Health, before she took a patient care coordinator position with Midwest Home Health Care. The couple moved to Bismarck in 1984 where Susan continued to work as a home health nurse.
In October of 1989 the couple adopted a daughter, Brianna, to the family. Susan selflessly became a stay-at-home mom when Brianna did not want to attend daycare any longer when she was 8 years old. She dedicated her hours to spending time with their daughter, attending every sports game and band concert.
Susan enjoyed playing piano, camping, and spending time at the lake with friends and family.
She loved to snow ski and spent many days in the mountains of Montana and Idaho. Her other passions were reading, crossword puzzles, listening to live music (especially Joe Friday, the band her husband plays in), and playing cards with family. She was an avid Bison football fan who made the annual trip to Frisco with her husband for many years. She enjoyed spending time with their dogs and was an active member of the Elks Lodge.
Susan is preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her daughter, Brianna, Fort Collins, CO; husband, Buzz, Bismarck; mother, Joyce Newgard, Fargo; brother, Robert Newgard, Cedar Rapids, IA; and many other family and friends. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that memorials be made to the Bismarck Cancer Center or Central Dakota Humane Society.
