Steven Zimmerman, 63, Bismarck, passed away on June 2, 2017 in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 13, at 2:00 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will be held at a later date.
Cremation has taken place and no visitation will be held.
Steven was born December 3, 1953 to Helmer and Jean (Ehni) Zimmerman in Harvey, ND. He attended grade school at Jerstad-Agersholm School in Racine, WI. He then attended and graduated from Fessenden High School in 1972, in Fessenden, ND. Steve attended North Dakota State University receiving a Bachelors degree in agricultural education and later his Masters in education . Steve did his student teaching at Rollette under Mr. Elvin Anderson. He taught Vocational Agriculture (Agricultural Education) in Towner for 21 years and then became the State Supervisor for Agricultural Education and the State FFA Advisor.
Steve was a devoted teacher, mentor, and friend to many. Several of his former students followed in his footsteps to become teachers of agricultural education and many, many more found successful careers in other agricultural pursuits.
Steve was the recipient of many awards throughout his career such as the National FFA Organization’s Agriscience Teacher of the Year and the NDSU Saddle and Sirloin Agriculturalist of the Year honor. He was a member of the North Dakota FFA Foundation Board of Directors and an honorary member of the North Dakota State Fair Board of Directors.
Steve loved music almost as much as he loved the FFA. He played in a group called Cabin Still or Allius Grease Gun & the Zerks. He also enjoyed softball, golfing, going to movies and fishing.
He is survived by his brothers, Myron (Betty), Carrington, David (Sherry), Kalistell, MT, and Jerald, Fessenden; nephew, Michael Zimmerman, Carrington; and nieces, Monica Shah, Fort Collins, CO and Tracey Sochia, Colorado Springs, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
