Richard (Dick) Rasmussen was born January 23, 1927 in Regan ND to Martinus and Rosa (Thompsen) Rasmussen. He grew up in rural Regan and attended school in Schrunk Township. He met the love of his life Muriel Smith, and on August 12, 1949 they were united in marriage. He spent three years working on the Garrison Dam, five years working for Consolidated Freightways as a driver, and in 1957 began farming and moved his family to rural Regan where they raised their five children and farmed until he retired in 1989. He spent his retirement traveling and spent several winters in Texas enjoying the warmth. In 2010 they moved to Bismarck where Dick always said the view of the garages didn’t compare to the beauty of the farm. He resided in Bismarck until his death.
Richard loved telling stories, and told them to anyone who would listen whether he knew them or not. He loved all animals, even when Muriel didn’t enjoy them. He also loved to hunt, fish and watch cartoons. One of his favorite pastimes was swatting flies, and he had an extensive collection of fly swatters. Most of all, he loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he enjoyed spending time with them. He always made them feel special. His family has many fond memories of him and his stories and will miss him greatly.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Muriel, two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger (Greta) Rasmussen, Jerry (Chloe) Rasmussen, Regan, two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon (Doug) Sorenson, Fargo; Cheryl (Jim) Triska, Wilton; 8 Grandchildren, Kenny Rasmussen, Brian Rasmussen, Jeff (Heather) Sorenson, Jodi (Randy Merkle) Sorenson, Holly (Justin Dally) Triska, Branden (Stephanie) Rasmussen, Maggie Triska, and Krystal (Shane Schoch) Rasmussen; and 11 great-grandchildren, Brett, Lana, Aspen, Elliott, Autumn, Braylee, Parker, Baylen, Iris, Mabel and Francine; one great-great-granddaughter Emberly and sister Betty Krushe.
