Paul was born January 5, 1927, to Mike and Rosa (Schmidt) Gustin in Flasher, ND. He attended a country school through 8th grade and then helped on the family farm until the age of 18 when he joined the Navy in December 1945. He was honorably discharged on November 1, 1947 and returned to the family farm. On October 10, 1949, he married Leona Kahl at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Flasher and they were blessed with 11 children, and recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. He served on the board of trustees at St. Lawrence Parish and volunteered at the St. Lawrence Cemetery for many years. He was a member of the Flasher American Legion and Knights of Columbus.
As a farmer, he spent many hours tending the soil and milking the cows all while teaching the value of hard work, honesty and the importance of faith to his family. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, playing pool, card games, chocolate popcorn, teaching his daughters to dance, and helping others. Paul was recognized by his gentle smile and friendly hello. He could easily be found if you just listened for his whistle. He believed in always leaving things better than you found them and took great pride in his well-kept farm, and the simple blessings that the Lord provided him and his family from it.
He is survived by his wife Leona; his 11 children Gary, Bismarck; Duane, Raton, NM; Vernon (Rose), Trinidad, CO; Virginia (Albert) Dolajak, Bismarck; Brenda (Miles) Miller, Raleigh; Greg (Kayln), Loveland, CO; Mike, Centennial, CO; Mark (Suszie), Calhan, CO; Marie (Joe) Jangula, Bismarck; Rita (Dewey) Schulz, Mandan; and Becky (Ron) Ness, Bismarck; 30 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Fr.
