Martha "Dits" Nelson, 87, of Bismarck, entered into heaven on December 12, 2017. Martha passed away peacefully at the St. Gabriel Community, with family and friends around her. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, at Bismarck Funeral Home.
Martha was born on January 20, 1930. She was born and raised in Chatom, Alabama. She attended Washington County Schools and graduated from Chatom High School. There she played basketball and was elected Homecoming Queen. She met her husband Gene in 1951 and they were married just 30 days later.
Upon Gene's completion of his Navy appointment, they made their home in Bismarck, ND. Martha enjoyed gardening, fishing and simply spending time in the great outdoors. She was employed by the Hart Agency and finished her working career with the University of Mary in the Public Affairs Department. It was a place that Martha truly enjoyed. But her favorite job was always being a mom and a grandma. She loved that job the most. She was a devoted mother to her two sons. Many of her friends knew her as Dits, and she left an impression on all that she had met. Martha was always the sweetest of ladies.
Martha was a member of the McCabe Methodist Church.
She is survived by her two boys, David (Cherlene) Nelson of Bismarck ND, and Michael (Stacey) Nelson of Maple Grove, MN, her grandchildren Katie, Annie, Matthew, and Benjamin.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband, C. Gene Nelson and both of her parents, Lucy McDonald Waren and William Waren, her two older sisters Lucy Dorothy "Dot" Waren Caldwell and Louise "Tee" Waren Dumas.
Her family would like to thank the staff of St Gabriel's Community for their care and compassion. They are truly the angels that watched over her. They would also like to thank all of her friends for their visits and prayers.
In lieu of flowers the family would like contributions to go the University of Mary, 7500 University Dr. Bismarck, ND 58504, in Martha's name.
