LaVerne Eleanor Thompson, 88, of Bismarck, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 27, 2018. She was at Sanford Medical Center following a severe stroke. LaVerne’s memorial service will be held at Bismarck Funeral Home on Thursday, August 2nd, at 11:00 a.m. It will be a celebration of her life of giving and caring for others. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
LaVerne was born in Mandan, ND, on November 5, 1929 to Vernon and Ora (Burdick) Henderson. She had three sisters, Delores, Joyce, and Ora Jean “Pinkie”. She graduated from Mandan High School and then met and married Robert W. Thompson of Bismarck on June 20, 1947. They had three children, Bonnie (Pete) Raasina, Marshall, and Brent. LaVerne and Bob were married 63 years before his passing in 2010. She is also preceded in death by her three sisters and two sons.
LaVerne worked as a bookkeeper for Montgomery Wards in Bismarck and retired from administration at the Community Center in Mandan. Until her recent illness, she was employed at Quality Inn in Bismarck where she had many friends.
LaVerne was a kind and generous person who loved all animals and was known to feed and care for strays that seemed to find a way to her door. She especially loved her indoor cats who were a source of many hours of comfort and joy.
She loved her family, and in addition to her 3 children, had 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Her grandson, Robert, lived with her and helped care for her over the years. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Donna Vallorano, and brother-in-law Ed Gunderson who live in the area. Laverne will be missed by all who knew her.
