Joan was born in Bismarck on April 13, 1937 to Clemens and Odelia Clooten. She grew up in the Bismarck area with her loving parents. She was very close to her six siblings and her nieces and nephews.

She followed this career for a short period of time until she married Joe in 1959 and started a family. After raising her children, she continued her career as a charge nurse at a local nursing home for several years. Her strength was seen not only physically as a double cancer survivor, but also spiritually through her immense dedication to her faith.
