Greta Gutknecht, 92, went home on January 18, 2017, in Bismarck. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 11:00 at the Bismarck Funeral Home, Bismarck, with the Rev. Marcis officiating. There will be no viewing, cremation has taken place. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Greta was born January 7, 1925, in Hazen, the daughter of Peter and Lydia Mohl. She was reared north of Hazen, where she attended school. She graduated from Hazen High School and attended Dickinson State College, receiving her teaching certificate. In 1944, Greta married Walt Gutknecht at Trinity Lutheran Church, north of Hazen. Greta taught school from 1944 to 1946 while Walt was in the military.
Greta and Walter owned Standard service stations in Hazen and Minot for 21 years. Greta worked for the Minot School system. She and Walter moved to Bismarck in 1978, where she worked in advertising and for the Bismarck School system until her retirement. She was a member at Zion Lutheran Church. She loved to play scrabble and made the most beautiful Christmas stockings for all family members and special friends.
Greta is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law; Deby Gardner, Minot, Shiela (Larry) Weigum, Blaine, WA, sister, Wilma Thorson , Bismarck; two grand children, and four great-grand children; Nikki (Dan) Bruce, Las Vegas, and their children, Hannah and Emma; Marc (Gina) Weigum and their two children, Lucas and Tristan, Bellevue, WA; two brother-in-laws, Melvin Gutknecht, Hazen and Don Gutknecht, Colorado Springs, CO and many nieces and nephews, as well as very special friends Wayne and Elaine Lehde, Joan Simon and Ken Zentner, Veronica DeChandt and her favorite Scrabble buddy, Elda Baisch.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, parents, Lydia and Peter Mohl, two sisters, Calma Mohl and Eunice Malke, sisters-in-law Francis Gutknecht, Hazen, Joan Gutknecht, Colorado Springs, Rhea Scherer Freese and brothers-in-law Roy Malke, Newton Schramm, Ray Scherer, Charles Freese and Harvey Thorson.
