Gertrude “Ginger” Adams Berkness died on July 21, 2018 at the age of 94. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date, with inurnment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery.
Gertrude was born on a rural farm in Clay County, MN, on July 5, 1924, to Emil and Signe (Kosen) Boen. She grew up in Moorhead, MN, where she met and married Duane Adams of Fargo, ND. They had four children, before Duane passed away in 1962. Gertrude then married Mervin Berkness of Buxton, ND. After his death, she moved to Fargo, and then to Bismarck to be near her daughter. For the past three years she has been in the loving care of Elm Crest Manor in New Salem, ND.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her first husband, Duane, second husband, Mervin, a son, Terry Adams, son-in-law, Dennis Wetch, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She is survived by her son Richard (Patricia) Adams of Kellogg, MN, son Steven (Leslie) Adams of Port St. Lucie, FL, daughter Dee Adams Wetch of Bismarck, ND, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
Gertrude was a member of the greatest generation. Her first husband was a Navy Pilot in the Pacific during WWII. Her second husband was a First Sergeant in North Africa and Italy during WWII. A resilient woman, she took life as it came with never a complaint or harsh word for anyone. She will be remembered and missed by all who knew her.
