Douglas Heim, 74, Mandan, died May 26, 2017 in a Bismarck hospital.  A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 1, at Bismarck Funeral Home.  Burial will be held at Turtle Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 31, 2017 from 5 – 8 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the service.

Douglas was born January 21, 1943 in Bismarck to Christof and Tillie (Makeeff) Heim.  He was raised in Mercer, ND.  His family owned Heim Service Garage, a Standard Oil Gas Station and a farm where Doug learned and accomplished much.  He attended Mercer School and graduated from Mercer High School in 1962.  His great interest in sports began when he started playing basketball in the 5thgrade.  He was awarded the most valuable player during his high school years.  This gave him the honor of being a referee for the elementary basketball games.

Doug was united in marriage to Gayle Eckenrode on August 31, 1963 in Bismarck.  They have one son Daron.

Doug worked for Quaility Builders in Bismarck for twenty years.  In 1986 they moved to Denver, CO.  There he worked for Viking Freight which was bought out by Fed Ex Freight.  He proudly worked for that company as a truck driver for 30 years.  Upon retiring Doug and Gayle moved back to Mandan.

Doug was very passionate about his FORD vehicles.  Doug spent many hours polishing and maintaining his beloved FORDS.  His attention to details earned him car trophies.  In addition to his Fords, he was a sports enthusiast.  He loved all sports but loved watching college basketball and car racing the most.  After moving to Denver, he became a true Denver Bronco fan.

Doug is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gayle; son, Daron (Violet); granddaughters, Akoya (Lance) Shuler, Armeka Heim; and great-granddaughter, Amariah Shuler.  He is also survived by his brothers, Milton (Carol), Washington, Chris (Mitzi), Mandan; sisters, Ruby Rau, Minot and Gloria (Jesse) Newton, Georgia; along with many nieces and nephews.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ervin; and brother-in-law, Gene Rau.
