Dorothy Rose Hertz, 85, Mandan, died Sept. 5, 2017, at Sanford Health, Bismarck.  Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan with the Rev. Lee Herberg officiating. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery following the service.

Visitation will be held Sunday, the 17th of Sept., from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bismarck Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

 Dorothy was born Sept. 19, 1931 at the Mickelson farmstead South of Mandan, to Frank and Rose (Mattson) Mickelson. She went to country school in Morton County and furthered her education in Mandan graduating from Mandan High School in 1949. After graduation in 1949 she met the love of her life and married Jake Hertz on Aug. 5, 1949, in Mandan.

Dorothy worked her last 2 years of high school as a nurses aid at the Mandan Deaconess Hospital.  In the early years of their marriage she was involved with supervising and teaching Sunday School at First Lutheran Church, Mandan,  a Scout Leader for Boy Scouts, and she also worked several years with the American Cancer Society for Morton County. In May of 1964, she was nominated Mother of the Year for Mother's Day. She thoroughly enjoyed packing up the station wagon, and heading to Heart Butte Dam with the kids to camp. She was grateful to be a wife, mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. She loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Dewey (Marsha) Hertz, Bozeman, MT, Pat (Nancy) Hertz, Mandan, Kerby (Barb) Hertz, Minot, Sandy Hertz, Bismarck, Dave (Denese) Hertz, Idaho Falls, ID, Brad (Deb) Hertz, Jake (Peggy) Hertz, Mari Severson (Page Larson) and Nikki (Dan) Boger, all of Mandan; 19 grandchildren, Vanessa Williams, Jason (Carrie) Hertz, Melanie (Rob) Ford, Deanne (Stewart) Schatz, Holly (Mike) Owens, Candice Turner, Ryan (Erin) Hertz, Brandon (Camy) Hertz, Angie (Trevor) Brown, Tyler (Shanna) Hertz, Ashley (Mike) Holst, Krystall (Tyler) Atkinson, Cory (Stacy) Hertz, Benjamin (Katie) Hertz, Jacob (Miranda) Hertz, Megan (Jeremy) Ensign, Eli Severson (Christina Biesecker , fiance & her daughter Aspen), Bridget (Jon) Welch and Dani Boger; and 42 great-grandchildren, Camryn Williams, Emma Hertz, Coleton, Jaxon and Easton Ford, Kaeley (Josh) Groff, Daxton, Traeden, Greyson, Trustn, Jamyn and Imani Schatz, Cassidy (Cory) Vinger and Caleb Owens, Tatum, Taylee and Tiecyn Hertz, Zach (Victoria) Hertz, Nathan and Ethan Hertz, Cody and Kayla Rish, Chase and Cole Brown, Rylee and Paige Hertz, Triptyn, Paisyn and Paxton Holst, Evan and Parker Atkinson, Talyn, Kinley, Boden and Maisyn Hertz, Madison and Logan Hertz, Caleb and Carson Hertz, and Jakson, Connor and Aiden Ensign; one great-great-grandchild, Alaric Hertz. She is also survived by her sisters, Betty Riedlinger, Bismarck, and JoAnn Axt, Wilton; and her sisters-in-law, Lois Peterson, Bismarck, Lois Hertz, Boynton Beach, FL and a brother-in-law, Art Fitterer, Glen Ullin.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Jake; her parents; her brother, Ernest (Buddy) Mickelson; one son-in-law, Louis Ohlhauser; one great-grandchild, Adam Atkinson; her brothers-in-law, Robert, Donald and Raymond Hertz, John Stenslie, John Peterson, Galen Riedlinger and Donald Axt; and her sisters-in-law Margaret, Vivian, Marian, and Jeannie Hertz and Dolores Fitterer.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent in Dorothy’s honor to Bismarck Cancer Center.
