David W. Wahl, 75, of Bismarck, passed away on July 9, 2017 in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home.
Cremation has taken place and no visitation will be held.
David was born to William and Katherine (Neibauer) Wahl in Mandan, ND. He grew up on a farm near Huff. He was his father’s helper when he was young boy; whether helping with the animals or helping drive a truck or tractor in the field.
At the age of 10 the family moved to Bismarck. He was raised Catholic and attended St. Mary’s School through high school. He left high school early to be on his own. He did various jobs, one of them being a driver for Northern Improvement.
His love of cars and what made them work led him to race cars locally and in Canada. This love of cars drew many people to him, which still remain his friends today. It also led to him opening a business in a small quonset building near Scotty’s and from there to the most known area by the Big Boy, Dave’s Auto Repair.
Through the business he also met many people, who up until his last days would stop and greet him as he walked down the street. Together Dave and Sherri had their business for many years. The cars they drove as daily drivers are collectibles of today. The business was sold in 1993 and he retired.
With his free time, he discovered the love and passion of collecting oil cans, signs, old tools, Etc. He liked going to auctions and shows to buy and sell.
His love of cars never died. He watched every car show and auction on TV and another favorite was “Pickers”. Always searching!
He loved all the pets they have had in their life. The latest pet, a poodle named Max.
He had many friends, Roger and Teryl Schmidt and Dave and Deb Thomason, who were able to be near him at the end. Thank you!
He married Sharon Ewine on March 10, 1962. They were married 55 years. When she died in March, it was a very great loss for Dave.
Dave had his own health issues; he had a bout of prostate cancer, diabetes and trouble with his back; and was very claustrophobic.
His sudden hospital stay, with no clues as to what was wrong from the medical staff make many of us feel he died of a broken heart.
Those of you who have come to pay your respects all know different bits and pieces of his life. We, his family, thank you for being a part of it.
He is survived by his brother, Dwayne (Sharon) Wahl, Bismarck; his nephews, Billy (Karmen) Wahl, Michael (Maria) Wahl and their child, Ava; and Preston (Lauren) Wahl; his brother-in-law, Wes (Mary) Ewine, Bismarck; and Charlotte Aberle and her family, Fargo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherri; his parents, William and Katherine; and his in-laws, Fred and Grace Ewine.
